The avlfilm mixer return!

It’s been over two years since we had an event, one because of the pandemic but also I (Ryan) haven’t been involved with film for a while. But things change, so we’re doing a meetup at Highland on Monday, February 6th at 6pm. Story with a reminder on insta.

I’ll be wearing an og AVLFilm shirt and will hopefully have a large table. Come join us and let’s talk film.

I’m also looking for volunteers to help with organizing potential future events. It’s not much work, but I really want someone (or multiple people) that have has their fingers on the pulse of film. It’s only ever been an occasional hobby for me, so someone more connected with the film industry would be great.

Awards Night: The Best of the Asheville 48 Hour Film Project 2021

The Asheville 48 Hour Film Project Awards Night and "Best Of" screening is a "Red Carpet" event where the top 10 films from the 2021 Competition will be screened and awards will be given to the filmmakers, cast and crew in various categories.

Be sure to dress to impress, as there will be photo ops as you walk in the door along the red carpet.

Hors d'oeuvres will be served, and food will also be available from "Sweet Cheesus" - a food truck specializing in Raclette, a delicious cheese that is melted and served over various items. Gluten-sensitive and Vegan items will be available.

Doors open at 4:30 pm, and the show starts at 5pm! The Best Of screening will be first, followed by an intermission before the Awards.

All are invited to attend the celebration! We will recognize the winning films, their hard work, and creativity! Although the is is an all-ages show, some of the films have strong language.

The winner of BEST FILM will go on to represent Asheville at the 2022 Filmapalooza Film Festival in Washington, DC, and earns a shot at screening at the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner.

Come out and celebrate in support of local filmmakers! Tickets are available here, as well as at the door.

This event is co-sponsored by The Orange Peel and Asheville School of Film.

AVL Film Club: Donnie Darko

A time traveling ghost in a bunny suit reciting doom prophecy? AVL Film Club will host a discussion (on Discord) on DONNIE DARKO, a cult classic sci-fi thriller feature shot for only $4.5 million. The film is a prime example of how high concept storytelling can be accomplished on an indie level. Watch the film for free with ads (no subscription needed) on Tubi.

A digital copy of the script is available here for comparison and analysis.

Movie Club: GOODTIME

AVLFilm Club will be a place to discuss and analyze the week’s film on Discord. Discussions will focus on filmmaking techniques and strategies which can be applied to our own filmmaking processes.

This Month's Selection is GOOD TIME, a thriller with a captivating script and snowballing action. We are lucky enough to have a PDF of the script to share with you. Part of our discussion will revolve around what content was cut from the film in service of pacing.

GOODTIME is available to stream from Netflix. Please watch the film on your own time! We will not be hosting a watch party, only discussion. I encourage everyone who’s interested in getting the most from our discussion to read the script as well. If you don’t have access, message one of our @mods and we will figure something out.
